Residents 18+ years of age from across the region are welcome to apply. However, many boards and committees require specific skills to complement the capabilities of the current membership.


Before applying, review the name of the vacant position and use your best judgement to decide if you fit the skills and capabilities of that vacancy. For more information read the sector definitions document

Applications are reviewed by Council once the application deadline passes. Council looks to match individuals who have the skills, knowledge and expertise with the appropriate board or committee. In addition, they look for applicants that can fill the missing components within the existing membership.

Members will work with other like-minded community leaders to advise Council and Administration on important projects and initiatives. You'll have opportunities to grow your network and professional skills, while gaining valuabale experience helping shape projects in your community. 

Positions are open to both urban and rural residents. Travel assistance is available for members who are required to travel to Fort McMurray from outlying communities.

Term lengths and the number of consecutive terms a member may serve depend on the committee or board guidelines as outlined in the guiding bylaw or other legislation. Term lengths and limits are outlined on each board or committee section through the Boards and Committees Portal.

Appointments following Fall Recruitment typically come into effect on January 1 of each year. However, meeting dates will depend on each board or committee. If you are appointed, you will be contacted with specific details for orientation and meeting dates and frequency.


Mid-term appointments may start at any time throughout the year depending on the needs of the board or committee, when the vacancy becomes available, and when Council formally makes an appointment.

Committees have supported activities such as the regional Street Banners and Public Art Bench programs, Snow Angels, and the Communities in Bloom symposium. The progression and completion of kiyām Community Park was also an outcome of the work by the Wood Buffalo Downtown Revitalization Advisory Committee.


The Community Identification Committee made recommendations for the Jeremy Snook Memorial Park in Wood Buffalo, and the Lauren Stemmann Children's Park adjacent to École Dickinsfield and Sister Mary Phillips school.
