Janvier is located approximately 120 kilometres south of Fort McMurray and is closely associated with the Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation and Chard Métis. Historically a gathering place, it continues to be a hub of cultural identity, with strong Dene and Cree roots.
The community is home to 437 residents (2021 census) of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation and reserve residents who work together to preserve language, stories, and traditional skills.
Surrounded by forest and lakes, Janvier offers abundant access to traditional hunting, trapping, and gathering. It’s a place where many still live off the land and where nature continues to shape everyday routines and relationships.
Janvier is known for its community warmth and cultural pride. Events like powwows, fish fries, and language programming are held throughout the year, often at the Janvier Multiplex. Elders are highly respected, and land-based learning is a part of everyday life.
